Naples, FL, USA

In high season, as ‘snowbirds’ and fortune 500 execs make their way down to their vacation homes, the town of Naples swells by a third, to roughly 280,000. They come for winter temperatures into the 80’s, for investment opportunities in what was until recently the fastest growing, fastest appreciating city in the U.S, for well-kept gated communities hidden behind cypress trees, for excellent dining along the main street, Fifth Avenue South, and for cultural offerings that include more than 100 art galleries. If you’re looking for a hopping nightlife you better head elsewhere: Naples is sound asleep by 10:30. Golf is the pastime of choice: only Myrtle Beach, SC, has more golf courses per person. The city’s first course opened in 1919, and the courses now number 100. Naples Beach Club is considered the best public course and has a line of golf carts already when it opens at 7:30 in the morning. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, has two 18-hole courses designed by Greg Norman.

    Gateway to the Everglades

Think of Naples and what comes first to mind usually are white sand beaches (Marco Island is wonderful, by the way), waterfront resorts, and high-end shopping boutiques. Put those images aside, and experience the real Naples - the Gateway to the Everglades. Thousands of animal species call the Everglades home, and you'll see your share of wildlife. Take a hike among gigantic cypress trees on the trails at nearby Collier-Seminole State Park, where wild orchids are plentiful. Be prepared to get wet while hiking in South Florida, the trails are frequently knee-deep in water, making this area one of the most rugged treks in the state. Kayaking through the mangrove tunnels is a journey not to missed and leaves you with memories that will last a lifetime. Ever paddled out and camped at your own private beach? The Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Reserve area is loaded with small islands that are perfect for a weekend getaway for those seeking solitude.

    Retired and Kickin'

I don't have kids and I'm not retired, but when I do and am, Naples'll be where it's at. The shops and restaurants along 5th Avenue are perfect for strolling. I'd stop at Yabba Island Grill for lunch, or maybe Kilwin's for some delicious ice cream after a day at the beach (the kiddies will love it). And post sunset, the Naples nightlife is nothing to scoff at. I love many of the places along 3rd Ave (Blu Sushi, Campiello, Tommy Bahama's) for drinking and mingling. Yeah, the crowd might be a little older, filled with divorcées, sugar daddies and uber-tanned retirees, but these folks still know how to have a good time... so much so that it'll change your perception of what being retired in Florida is all about.

    Favorite Beach Getaway!

Almost every Christmas my family drives down to Naples, Florida. I couldn't say enough good things about Naples. With the temperature almost always at the perfect temperature at 70 degrees, the heat is never overwhelming. My family, who live in Naples, have guest passes to a private beach that we love to take advantage of. The beaches of Naples are wonderful. They aren't tacky and overcrowded but rather a welcome and relaxing change in pace from the normal packed east coast beaches. One day I even saw singer James Taylor spending a day relaxing on the beach with his family! There are many restaurants literally just a few feet from the water! I've enjoyed many dinners looking over at the sun setting on the wonderful smooth sand and peaceful water. I can just never get enough of Naples Florida, and can't wait to go back soon!

    Lazy vacations

Great for lazy vacations when all you want to do is lay in the sun, swim in the ocean and play a round of golf now and then, Naples is a low-key destination. Frequented by families with children and lovebirds, Naples has a luxury hotels and good dining options. Some of the hotels offer day camps and day care, perfect for parents who want some time without the kiddies around. However, since there's not much nightlife and very many "attractions" outside of the beach and golf, Naples is best for a long weekend, rather than a weeklong vacation.
