Oahu Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Hawaiians refer to Oahu as “the gathering place,” but it’s not just Hawaiians who gather here. Oahu attracts people from all over the world, drawn by sights past the skyscrapers framing Honolulu's Waikiki beach. Sometimes treated as a transit point and overlooked as a destination in favor of its more popular island neighbors, Oahu has some wonderful qualities in its own right. Rent a red Ferrari and explore the island of Magnum P.I. Climb the steep cliffs of Makapuu, Oahu’s easternmost point, and watch the daring go body surfing in the treacherous waters below. Visit Shangri La, the spectacular home of the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke. Get an up-close look at the amazingly colorful bark of the Rainbow Eucalyptus tree at Honolulu’s Botanical Gardens. Visit Pearl Harbor for a lesson in WWII history. Pick out a fragrant lei of jasmine, plumeria or tuberose at the lei stands on Honolulu’s Maunakea Street.

North Shore

Cue the Jaws music. Shubees (tourists with all the equipment and surf wear but none of the know-how), shark biscuits (body boarders), and pros have been mysteriously drawn to the North Shore for decades. The North Shore has something for everyone. Shaved ice, buttery garlic shrimp, paradisiacal beaches, gentle sunshine, and salty clean ocean breezes make this surf Mecca a righteous vacation destination for even the smallest grommet (child surfer). Ignore the rumors that surfers look like shark bait from beneath the water. That may be true, but wary beginners can sit safely on the shore and stare in amazement as the tiny surfers in the distance are swallowed by tubes of ocean surf and tossed about in the soup (white water). So get totally stoked for that upcoming Hawaiian vacation wahine (women), kane (men), and keiki (children). Palekaiko (paradise) waits.

Waikiki Aquarium

Nemo and his friends live at the Waikiki Aquarium. Well, at least many of the children who visit the third oldest aquarium in the United States think so. I’m inclined to think that if Nemo had a choice, he would, indeed, choose the Waikiki Aquarium. By no stretch of the imagination is the Waikiki Aquarium a fancy setup. You won’t find blowout extravaganza shows or spectacular bonanzas featuring flying killer whales. What you will encounter is the opportunity to touch squishy, slimy sea cucumbers; the thrill of seeing a green sea turtle up-close and personal; the awesomeness of watching seals devour a mid-day meal; and the goose-bumpy feeling of witnessing the lumbering grace of the nearly extinct monk seal. When it comes to aquariums featuring creatures of the deep, the Waikiki Aquarium takes the cake—err, bait.

Foster Botanical Gardens

Perhaps Dr. Seuss had the imagination-inducing rainbow-colored trees of the Foster Botanical Gardens in mind when he wrote The Lorax. The gardens sit on 14 acres of land, 4 ½ of which once belonged to amateur botanist Dr. William Hillebrand, former physician to Hawaii’s royal family (when it was under monarchy rule). Hillebrand filled the property with enormous earpod and kapok trees. The land was later sold to the Foster family, who then filled in the gardens with exotic plants of all varieties. This attraction is a gardener’s dream with its colorful orchid display, herb gardens, and terraces filled with exotic plants from around the world, including heliconia, aroid, palm, and ginger. The lush and fragrant garden is a welcome respite in the middle of the bustling city of Honolulu.

Waikiki Beach

What do the Pink Palace, Sex on the Beach (the fruity cocktail; get your mind out of the gutter!), coconut bras, and sandy beaches have in common? They are all things you can find in Waikiki, of course. This lovers’ paradise draws the young and old (and in some cases, the really, really old) to her sandy shores, promising perfect weather, warm waters, tan lines, and frou-frou drinks. A special treat, Sunset on the Beach is a free event featuring food vendors, entertainment, and a movie viewing on a 30-foot screen, right on the shores of Waikiki. Held on a semi-monthly basis, Sunset on the Beach is a local favorite, drawing local families and tourists. Waikiki is a sunup to sundown vacation destination.

Chinatown's Maunakea Street

Visiting Chinatown’s Maunakea Street is like entering another country, right in the middle of Honolulu. While Chinatown is not for the weak of stomach or the sensitive of nose, there is a special allure to surveying the piles of exotic foods, including animal lungs, frogs, mussels, and nearly every variety of fish known to man. Most delightful are the piles of vegetables and fruits, including the smelly but ever-popular durian fruit. If you want to make an Asian dish, Maunakea Street is the place to go for the best spices and the freshest ingredients. Quite often, restaurant owners and well-known chefs can be seen perusing the food offerings and making deals with the booth owners.

    Flowers, flowers everywhere

Sometimes I wonder....what is the BEST part of Oahu?

THE FLOWERS AND VEGETATION? The lush garden plants all over the island are so incredibly romantic.

Everywhere you walk, you will find tropical plants, gardens, and flowers galore. The hotels have hugh displays of fresh flowers both inside the buildings themselves, and on the grounds surrounding the buildings.

Just drive around the island, and see the wonderful personal gardens, the flowers and plants beside the road, and along the beaches.

Oahu is truly a tropical paradise.

    Koko Gardens...Oahu

    03/06/2009

    100%

    Oahu, HI, USA

Koko Gardens: One of the less known hiking trails on Ohau is the Koko Gardens. This area has so many different kinds of plants and vegetation and is a quiet place to spend the day. Some of the many plants found are: Cacti Alluaudias Sansevierias Baobabs Dryland Palms Aloes Euphorbias Adeniums

Of special note is the native grove of wiliwili trees (Erythrina sandwicensis) found in the Hawaiian section.

KOKO CRATER BOTANICAL GARDEN is home to a collection of rare and beautiful plants from the tropical regions of the world. Some are rare or endangered in their native habitat. It is a cinder cone remaining from the last active volcano that occurred on O'ahu approximately 10,000 years ago. This crater is the tallest tuff ring in Hawaii, measuring 1,207 feet in height. The slopes of the crater drop steeply into the Molokai Channel, an area which lacks protection from any offshore reefs, causing very turbulent seas in this area.

We have never seen so many different nor such large Cacti. They grow in one whole section that is amazing both in the variety of plants and their individual size. This collection is amazing. This is a little known treasure on the island. From our experience, this park has few visitors and is one of the island's best kept secrets.

Some of the best beaches in the world

    01/22/2009

Kahala Beach: A favorite wedding spot on the island. Come and spend the day here and you will often see a wedding. We have watched as many as four weddings in one day!! Located at the Kahala Hotel and Resort, it is very near Waikiki and is the only beach on Ohau that serves food right on the beach. This is an amazing resort, but costly. If you have a smaller budget, it is a wonderful place to spend the day. The beaches in Hawaii are all public beaches and you'll find that the hotel staff is happy to make your day special.

There is so much to do here. This is the home of Dolphin Quest a really special place on the island. Here you can swim with the dolphins, or if you would rather, just watch them do their tricks from pool side. Visitors are welcome and there is no charge to watch and talk with the trainers. They always seem to have time for you and have a wealth of information about these wonderful animals.

The beach area here is so relaxing and QUIET!! I'm not sure what we like the best. I like to be in the shade with the cool breezes blowing all around. Stan sits in the sun, and we both can read for hours. The mountains in the background are an added bonus. This is a great place to meet friends for the day and to watch the sunset in the evening.

Drive to Kahala Beach and park at the public parking area. Walk to the beach and along the ocean to the east to the Kahala Hotel area and pull up a chair and spend the day relaxing. Or if you don't have a car, take bus 14 from the eastern most area of Waikiki near Starbucks on the edge of the park.

    Wonderful Oahu

    07/29/2008

    100%

    Oahu, HI, USA

This is one of my favorite vacations spots in the world. Besides well known Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach and Haunama Bay, there well hidden gems. I love the malasadas at Leonard's Bakery on Kapahulu. Everyone should visit the National Cemetary of the Pacific and then drive up Tantlus Drive in a convertible....what a view! Even one of the best Elvis impressionists in the world (Jonathon Von Brana) entertains at Stars in Concert in Waikiki. Maui has the resorts, the Big Island volcanoes and Kauai peacefulness but Oahu will be always be the best parts of Hawaii combined for me.

    A Perfect O`ahu Day

    07/10/2008

    100%

    Oahu, HI, USA

A perfect day on O`ahu is easy to be had. Start off with breakfast at Big City Diner (incredible French toast!). Next, hit the beach in front of the Royal Hawaiian where you can nap like royalty in the shadow of the “Pink Palace.” After a relaxing sunbath, head to Duke's Canoe Club for lunch where you can enjoy a buffet with Mahi Mahi, Kalua Pork, and Teriyaki Chicken that will make your mouth water. After lunch, it’s time to pick up a rental car and head to Hanauma Bay. At Hanauma Bay, you snorkel with a rainbow of fish and enjoy an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean. Wind down your perfect day with a cold beer and a Baja Burger dripping with sour cream and salsa at Cheeseburger in Paradise.

    I love O`ahu

    07/09/2008

    100%

    Oahu, HI, USA

We lived there for three years as my husband is in the Air Force. It was the assignment of a lifetime and I think we will probably retire on one of the Hawaiian islands someday. O`ahu is a busy, crazy island in a lot of ways; it's not called the "gathering place" for no reason! But still, it is a superb little piece of heaven in the middle of the Pacific. My favorite experiences while I lived there was what my family and I called "fake vacations." We would dress up in our goofy "aloha clothes" and hit Waikiki and enjoy Honolulu for a day, evening, or weekend as a tourist. There is something really great about walking along the beach, holding hands while the sand and surf tickle your toes and enjoying watching families from around the world convene on this little slice of paradise. People leave their troubles on their respective "mainlands" and come to O`ahu to forget about their problems, their worries, their daily stresses. Somehow, the warm sunshine, the smiling locals, and the swishing surf just wash all of that "stuff" away.
