La Romana Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
With many famous professional baseball players from the Dominican like Rafael Santana and Freddy García retiring in La Romana (Sammy Sosa was born here too!), it’s no wonder everything in La Romana seems like a home run. Located on the south side of the DR only an hour and a half from Santo Domingo, the third largest city in the Dominican Republic with an estimated population of 250,000, La Romana is a vital cultural center. It’s also a favorite weekend getaway for tourists and locals alike thanks to its natural beauty and pristine beaches. Zoom over to Casa de Campo – a sprawling, Ponderosa-style, tropical seaside resort with three championship golf courses, polo fields and even a private jet (just in case the yacht is in the shop for the week).
Perfect for a weekend getaway, Casa de Campo (which means Country House) holds the promise of gorgeous scenery and a relaxing escape from the stresses of daily life. The area is also experiencing a nice real estate surge with growing communities of vacation homes and condos popping up all over the place. The Altos de Chavón is another must see! Set just above the Chavon River, this unique and vibrant cultural community was designed by Robert Coppa – a famous Italian architect who’d made his name designing movie sets for Paramount. Yep, definitely a home run!
