Crested Butte, CO, USA

Deep in the rugged backcountry of the south-central Colorado Rockies is the former coal-mining town of Crested Butte, population 1,600. Stroll down Elk Avenue, the main street through the downtown National Historic District, and step into the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum for a peak into life during the mining era. Take the free shuttle bus three miles to Mount Crested Butte and hit the mountain’s 121 trails. Face gravity on Rambo, the steepest run in North America, or brave the double-black-diamond Extreme Limits—the site of the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships every February. If your skills are closer to average, don’t despair: more than half of Crested Butte's trails are rated intermediate. Had enough of the slopes? Go snowshoeing in the nearby Gunnison National Forest, or hit the sledding hill at the community-owned Crested Butte Nordic Center. Had enough of the outdoors altogether? Kick back with a drink at Kochevar's, one of the oldest bars in Crested Butte, where Butch Cassidy once had to cut an evening short and make such a hasty exit out the back door he forgot his gun—and his drink, presumably.

    The Wildflower Capitol of Colorado

    Crested Butte, CO, USA

Crested Butte, Colorado is our favorite place to escape to each summer. The unique weather and geological conditions of the Upper East River drainage area here produces a prolific display of wildflowers in summer. Since 1986 residents of this historic old town have risen to the occasion and put on the Annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival during the second week of July, drawing enthusiastic visitors in increasing numbers from all over the USA. A Colorado State Senate resolution in 1990 proclaimed the town as the official Wildflower Capitol of Colorado. Everyone certainly works hard to live up to this reputation. As soon as the snow melts many residents begin preparing their small gardens to show off to visitors. The town garden tour is a popular event. Expert guides lead wildflower tours, taking hikers and bikers into the backcountry to see the brilliant displays of color. Photography workshops and other programs are offered including some really extreme “Botanizing.” This year the record snow took longer than usual to melt and the flower bloom was delayed, so Jan and I postponed our trip by two weeks. It was worth the wait. Nature’s display was exceptional - yet again.
