A former Soviet stomping ground, Prague happens to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Untouched by war battles, the city remains old yet youthful and unlike any other in Eastern Europe. While remnants remain of the Soviet regime - buildings with rowed windows and smokey, underground cave-like clubs and bars – the untouched nature of the city brings an experience of Old World excitement over the history that has passed here. On the famed Charles Bridge, orange rooftops dot the horizon and winding cobblestone streets weave their way through the city. Local vendors sell paintings and jewelry, but perhaps the most interestingly mind-boggling sight is a musical quartet – one man on a cello, one on a clarinet, and one keeping the beat by tapping a CD case. Drums? Who needs ‘em? Another touted area in Prague is Wencelsas Square, akin to New York’s Time Square, perhaps on a slightly smaller scale. Though there are many diverse neighborhoods, one stroll through Wencelsas Square and it feels as though you’ve never left the United States. Sure it’s bustling with fun shops, eateries, and hotels, but the immersion of McDonald’s, KFC and tourists leave much to be desired. This sad sight is counteracted only by the local food. At the bottom of the square, a street cart, the true test of a culture’s food, serves up fried mozzarella cheese sandwiches so delicious that it’s impossible to eat just one. The cheesy goodness is a standout, not only due to its salty, gooeyness but also due to its reminiscence of high class Jersey Shore fried fare. Your only concern will be what to wash it down with and the answer inevitably reverberates: hot wine. Served with a bit of cinnamon bite and a slice of orange, hot wine is the ideal beverage for a city plagued by cool weather for most of the year. It warms from the inside out, just as a good adult beverage should. With fried cheese sandwich and alcoholic beverage in hand, there’s nothing left to do but to people watch. After all, the next CD tapping musician could be just around the corner.
A word of warning. Prague in Februrary=freezing. However, I was on a college budget and the flights were cheap. Needless to say, my three friends and I managed to have a good time. Aside from the great beer and eastern European dishes (goulash!) the sights were beautiful. We spent hours exploring the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, which contains some of the most beautiful stained glass windows I have ever seen. A definite must-see. We took some great pictures and enjoyed the street artists and vendors on the famous Charles Bridge. We stayed near Old Town Square, which holds the famous Astronomical Clock. The nightlife was notable as well. We enjoyed specialty beers at the huge beer halls, and even went to the biggest nightclub in eastern Europe! Overall, a great city. Being there in February did have another perk--not a lot of tourists! =)
In the center of tourist life of Prague lies Wenceslas Square. It is lined with a dozen and some shops and restaurants with the intent of parting tourists from their Euros. You'll find a McDonalds, TGI Fridays, Adidas, and even Barnes and Noble, with ringing cash registers. I'm not a big believer in shopping in American stores while traveling abroad. Especially when the USD is suffering. Why spend double just to say you bought it in Europe? Thankfully there were plenty of other shops of a much more native nature. Hidden in city walls, alleys, and along quaint stone and brick laid streets, were little shops and restaurants with leases older than the United States. Prague is a labyrinth of alleys, streets, highways, and ancient sidewalks. It takes no time at all to find yourself off the tourist trail and exploring the real Prague. But be careful of the pickpockets who will gladly point a tourist back to Wenceslas Square the long way, while quietly parting the tourist from their wallets. Prague is beautiful, but be sure to travel smart!
Since the fall of the Iron Curtain nearly 20 years ago, Prague has undergone one of the most radical (and successful) transformations of the former Soviet territories. With their ascension into the European Union, the denizens of Prague have reinvented their city as a center of movie production, international banking, high fashion and European intellectualism. All of this most evident in the crisscrossing network of streets and alleys surrounding the city’s Old Town Square – one of the few places in the world where one can buy a $1200 Armani suit jacket and 25 cent beer on the same block. All the conveniences of a major European metropolis have been transplanted into the heart of one of the continent’s most well preserved medieval locales. From Alchemists Row at the historic Prague Castle to the sweltering corridors of the Karlovy Lazne (Europe’s largest nightclub), the old stomping grounds of Franz Kafka remain just as mysterious and creatively charged in the 21st century as they did in the 16th.
