Hilton Head, SC, USA

In 1663, an English sea captain came upon an island, which he promptly named after himself and claimed for the British crown. (And no, he did not name the island after his head. He called it Hilton's Headland, which was shortened along the way.) Many come to Hilton Head to golf, and indeed, the island does host 24 golf courses, 20 of them public. But there is more to this 54-square mile island than just golf. The island has that same Old South graciousness you’ll find in Charlestown, a two-hour drive to the north, and some of the nicest beaches in South Carolina.

Where to Play on a Rainy Day

    08/12/2008

    100%

    Hilton Head, SC, USA

On those rainy days when you just can’t decide what to do with yourself (or the kids) and start to feel like a caged animal, let the family loose at The Sandbox, Hilton Head’s interactive children’s museum. Perfect for those aged 8 and under, The Sandbox even holds a toddler room to let the little ones waddle along at their own pace. The Sandbox boasts, “There are no Do Not Touch signs at this museum.” Really, everything is made for kids of all ages to play on and explore while coincidentally learning a thing a two. There are short rock climbing walls, an international airport terminal complete with jet plane, costumes, and some working accessories like captain headphones and throttle sound effects. Art Alley, a giant Plexiglas covered wall inspires both adults and kids to doodle. Construction site, elevated sandbox, and Spanish Galleon type boat complete the experience. Easy to find, right behind a Methodist Church on Pope Avenue (I am a landmark driver), spend more time playing and less driving! At only six bucks a head, The Sandbox is definitely one of the cheaper family friendly activities on peaceful Hilton Head Island and certainly one of the most fun!

    My Home Away...Hilton Head Island

    08/06/2008

If you REALLY know Hilton Head Island…you know Greg Russell and his song “Come Away Home”. That is what HHI means to me. It may be known for its amazing golf and tennis facilities, but I have much deeper roots on that foot-shaped piece of land. My family started vacationing there in the early 80’s right before it grew to immense popularity. Back then we literally had alligators on the MINIATURE golf course and if your ball bounced off the windmill and into the little pond…you did NOT go fishing for it! We spent year after year with my cousins playing in the pool, riding our rusty beach cruisers to the long flat beaches or ice cream shop. In the evening, we all went down to Harbour Town to gaze at the yachts, sit in rocking chairs or watch Greg Russell sing and get even the grumpiest vacationer to smile. Many nights we’d hang out at the house and play charades all night or take walks…I can still hear the frogs croaking. When I look back at my youth – these are the times with my family that stand out above all. I now love taking my own family to Hilton Head Island. On my last few visits…I noticed growth and some changes, but the heart of Hilton Head Island is still alive and well.

Fun vacation spot and nice cops (go figure)

Both summers I’ve been to Hilton Head I’ve left with a nice suntan and a lingering smile on my face. Though that was in no small part attributable to the company I had while I was there, it didn’t hurt that the beaches and the town are beautiful and welcoming. Here’s one of my favorite Hilton Head experiences: one day I was walking down the beach during low tide, and at some point my cell phone must have slipped out of my pocket. I was leaving the next day, and in any case assumed it had tragically drowned when the tide came in. The next day while my friends and I were driving back up to Pennsylvania for my college graduation when one of their cell phones rang. They passed it to me, and on the other end was a Hilton Head police officer asking if he was speaking with Elena! They ended up sending it to me in the mail, and when it was back in my hands I was absolutely stunned with how far above and beyond mere kindness their actions were. Not only that, but the beaches are beautiful and along most stretches not too crowded, there are fantastic restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of practically anywhere, gorgeous rental properties are abundant, and if swimming and sunbathing aren’t enough for you, there are plenty of other things to do. I recommend the mini-golf, personally.
